Seasteading: Why not colonize?

08.17.11

From a website on Seasteading:
[W]e work to enable seasteading communities -- floating cities -- which will allow the next generation of pioneers to peacefully test new ideas for government.

I randomly followed the link curiously thinking, "is this for real?" I stayed on the site for another 5 minutes in the FAQs because my brain kept bringing up the word "colonization" and I wondered if there is consciousness on neo-colonialism among seasteaders. Sure enough, I landed (ahem) an answer just third from the top: "Why not just buy an island or part of a third-world country?"

What? The answer tersely delivers a cost-benefit argument against colonization, of course.

Slightly nauseated, I then did a quick page search for the word "ecological" and when I came up with zero hits I gave up. I can only imagine what another five minutes of browsing would bring.
